Good that our FR authors take care of us so that the Forgotten Realms are always first priority. I'll save more info for the FR seminar at GenCon. The authors of the adventure are myself and James Jacobs, of Dungeon magazine. You can drop the adventure into your FR campaign seamlessly. It's set in a stretch of a fairly generic campaign "region," but here's my secret plan: I made sure that the topography of the place very closely matched up with a piece of the Forgotten Realms map (specifically, the Channath Vale-the region around the Wyrmbones, Rethmar, and the Channathwood). Red Hand of Doom is a 128-page "super-adventure" that starts you off at 5th level and takes you up to about 10th or 11th. Seems like a very FR-friendly generic super adventure module! Here is what Richard Baker had to say about "The Red Hand of Doom". It filled in a bit more of the Vale and added in some stuff off the edges of the map - I liked the dwarf city (which might have been called Overlook I can't remember).Candlekeep Forum - "The Red Hand of Doom" and the FR I'm not very familiar with it (mostly from the "Let's Read - Scales of War" thread on this site from a long time ago). It has a hook to Forge of Fury, but there is no compelling reason for the party to follow it up unless they feel like it, which is a bit more sandbox-like.Īpologies if you already know this, but there is a 4th edition sequel of sorts to Red Hand of Doom in the Scales of War adventure path in Dungeon 156 onwards. Sunless Citadel in particular is quite easy to add in some "Red Hand" foreshadowing - spoiler free version is that I replaced the town in the adventure with Drellin's Ferry, and had the (group of inhabitants) as minions of the Red Hand, sent fairly recently to restore the citadel (now a fallen temple of the Red Hand's deity) to basically get rid of them as they weren't considered very reliable. (Although the first adventure was actually one of the free short 3rd edition ones from the WotC website, called Shelter from the Storm or something like that.) It's not really a sandbox, but when I ran Red Hand of Doom we played through Sunless Citadel and Forge of Fury first. They are only a third of the way through on the prequel but they seem to be enjoying it. ![]() I took the approach of railroading my group for the first few games to get them focussed on the quest (which they did nicely) and then opened it up more to a modified sandbox. The setting is wilderness and city, which is a little out of the usual for my PCs. To expose the evil son, I threw in a murder mystery involving the death of a book seller who had stolen the evil son's rare book that reveals how to complete the religious ceremony associated with their second quest. I thought this added made sense as Tiamat's aspect appears at the end of the module and there are regular appearance of hobgoblin clerics. I've chucked into the mix, partly to throw them off the scent and add story depth, a second quest to reinitiate a religious quest that is associated with a war between Ehlonna and Tiamat. On the way, the PCs are becoming aware of the Red Hand. The PCs in my game are on a quest to deliver a message from the War hero to the evil son saying an attack is imminent and asking for help. ![]() The evil son has a toe hold on power: he is unrecognised by everyone due to some fantastic disguise and is currently the Militia leader of a major town at a cross roads. This evil son is the mortal enemy of a local Greyhawk War hero that the Maquis of Sterich set up to administer the lands the evil son is seeking to control. The prequel is based on the idea that the evil son of the former local lord in western Sterich is working to take control of his family's land and is working with the RHOD. From all that I read on line Sterich fitted the bill perfectly and I've set it about 6 years after the Greyhawk Wars. I took the approach that an unsettled location with a political vacuum would allow for the forces of evil to grow. It's based in Sterich, rather than Elsir Vale. ![]() I am running a prequel to RHOD using 3.5e version at the moment.
